To celebrate National Careers Week, we are spotlighting some of our impressive employees to give an insight into careers in the construction industry.
Laura, our HR Advisor, provides support to the BMD UK business which encompasses overseeing and supporting the business with recruitment, employee engagement, retention, learning and development and generalist HR. As well as providing leadership and support to the UK Corporate Services Team.
We sat down with Laura to ask her a few questions about her experience and her role at tusp.
Can you share a brief overview of your career journey?
My career journey kicked off when I embarked on my Law and Criminology degree. Throughout university, I got hands-on experience in various law firms, initially as a law clerk and later as a graduate, focusing mainly on property law, while also wrapping up my postgraduate legal training. During this time, I realised that a career in law wasn’t my calling and I decided to pivot towards a learning and development role within the legal sphere. This shift eventually led me to my current role in HR.
While my path hasn’t been a direct one, each twist has been instrumental in shaping my skills, building connections, and accumulating valuable experiences that have brought me to working in a personally challenging and fulfilling role.
What advice would you give to someone aspiring to enter your profession or industry?
A career in HR is incredibly rewarding and gives you the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on people’s lives and contribute to the success of organisations. My biggest advice would be to develop skills across various HR functions, be open and flexible to change, be inquisitive, stay curious and embrace opportunities to learn!
What is your favourite BMD Group value? And why?
It’s quite challenging to single out just one, considering how each value resonates in the work my team and I do here at tusp and BMD. However, if I had to pick, I’d say Collaborative stands out to me the most.
I firmly believe in the power of teamwork and collaboration in fostering innovation, creativity, and a supportive work environment which ultimately leads to our joint success.
