North East New Fleet and Service Expansion Plans
The North East Combined Authority (NECA) has approved plans for the Metro and Local Rail Strategy. The strategy identifies a network of disused or under-used rail routes across Northumberland, Durham and Tyne and Wear that could be brought back to life putting towns back on the national railway map.The plan is to replace the original Metro fleet with new trains including power supply upgrades and depot facilities.
The NECA hopes to kick start an expansion scheme with a strategy that includes a £1bn investment in the Metro system over the next 20 years.
Nick Forbes the transport leader of Newcastle City Council stated that “Local rail brings huge economic and social benefits to the communities it reaches today but we need to extend those benefits into new areas. To do that it is essential we secure funding for a new fleet of Metro trains, acting as a catalyst for the expansion of local rail and better integration across North East England.”
Here at tusp we wish the very best for the new fleet and service expansion plans and will follow the news updates with interest.
